For nearly 120 years, the beginning of fall semester at Penn State has heralded the start of Nittany Lions football. This photo shows activities at "new" Beaver Field on Alumni Day, October 25, 1924, following a clash with Syracuse. More than 20,000 fans were in attendance in the all-wooden grandstands and temporary seating. The "old" Old Main is visible in the upper left corner, Irvin Hall faces the field across Curtin Road, and Rec Hall (when built five years later) would be just out of the picture at upper right. Beaver Field occupied this site through the 1959 season, then the stands (steel replaced wood beginning in 1931) were moved to the east side of campus to become part of Beaver Stadium. Kern Building and part of the Nittany Parking Deck occupy this ground today.
