The Daily Collegian is one of the nation’s oldest student-run daily newspapers, tracing its history to 1887 with the appearance of the first regularly issued student publication, the Free Lance. Containing twelve pages and selling for fifteen cents per copy (a year’s subscription cost a dollar), the monthly Free Lance was the product of the Cresson and Washington literary societies. Vowing in the first issue not to give their readers “a lot of dry literary and moralizing matter,” the paper was a venue for student opinion, original writing and local news. In 1904 the Free Lance was succeeded by the weekly State Collegian, and in 1920 it was renamed the Penn State Collegian and changed to semi-weekly. In 1940 the Daily Collegian was born. The newspaper had its offices in various locations, including many years in Carnegie Building, as shown in the above photo taken in 1964. The Collegian moved to James Building, its current location, in 1989.
