1st in a series
In the 1950s, at the beginning of each fall semester, first-year students were still expected to wear dinks, or beanies, as part of freshman customs. Freshman customs gradually faded, beginning immediately following World War II, with an influx of military veterans, until virtually disappearing by the mid-1960s.
