Celebrating Our Sesquicentennial
Photographs from the Penn State University Archives

20th in a series
This photo of students making ice cream at the Penn State Creamery dates from the early 1900s. The University has included dairy science in its curriculum since its founding as an agricultural college 150 years ago. In 1892 it offered the nation's first collegiate-grade instruction in ice-cream making, from which has evolved today's international reputation as a center for research and instruction in frozen confections. Penn State's first free-standing creamery was built in 1889. The Creamery was located in Patterson Building, from 1904 until 1932, when it moved again to Borland Lab. In the current retail sales room, opened in 1960, 750,000 cones of exquisite flavors such as Sesquicentennial Sundae, Keeney Beany Chocolate, and Peachy Paterno are hand-dipped each year. Soon the Creamery will have a new name and location. Get the details at http://www.creamery.psu.edu/Location.html
