Celebrating Our Sesquicentennial
Photographs from the Penn State University Archives

24th in a series
These are some of participants in the 1980 version of the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon--the world's largest student-run philanthropy. More than 300 couples took part that year in this no-sitting, no-sleeping, 48-hour event; they're shown here during exercises to avoid muscle-cramping that sometimes plagues even the most robust dancers. THON began in 1973 as a 30-hour fundraiser in the HUB Ballroom. Ever-increasing crowds forced its removal to the more spacious White Building in 1979, where it remained until moving to Rec Hall in 1999. The dancers you see here helped to secure more than $50,000 in donations, an extraordinary amount at the time, but only the beginning of a tremendous outpouring of generosity. Through February 2004, THON has raised over $30 million to benefit The Four Diamonds Fund, which helps thousands of children and their families at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center fight pediatric cancer. To learn more about THON, and how you can get involved, visit http://www.thon.org
